Where Oh Where is Jesus, as Tears Streak Our Children’s Cheeks?

The Naked Mormon podcast was recorded on Monday and published yesterday. I just listened to it tonight. Bryce interspersed the interview by reading several of the stories on the website.

I’ve read every damn story already. But, as Bryce read them, I cried again. At every single one. Vicarious trauma has set in big time tonight.

Bryce said, “These stories matter.” You bet they matter. These are real people. These were real children. Innocent children. Victimized by a well-intentioned but, highly flawed institutional practice.

After 2 1/2 hours of podcast, Bryce’s last words were, “If history is any indicator of future events, the battle has just begun.” That brought big tears that are still flowing.

Oh hell, how can this just be the beginning? Children.Are.Being.Destroyed. How can this be the beginning? We know what is happening. How can this possibly not be the end of doing hideous damage to the little ones?

Where is our love of following the Savior? Where is Jesus in all of this? After all, it was he who said, “But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.”

In the face of Christ’s dire warning, how can it be that we are battling each other? How can it be that we have just started fighting?

Let us finish….And protect our precious and vulnerable children.

Masturbation & The Accountant

Today, I sat down with my accountant to review the company’s tax filing for 2017. Her name is Mill. She is a partner at a large regional accounting firm. Twenty five years ago, my taxes got too complicated for me to handle. After many semi-annual meetings, we have become good friends.

The review began with the usual small talk. Soon she recognized that I seemed distracted and in a hurry. She asked why. The following conversation was launched.

ME: I know your son is grown now. But, suppose this happened to your son when he was 12. Your pastor called him in for a one-on-one meeting . . . .

MILL: (She quickly cut me off with a firm karate chop to the conference table.) NO! That’s wrong. It makes me feel sick. With the Larry Nassar scandal and the Penn State stuff and all the sexual abuse that’s coming out, it makes me ill to think of my son alone with anyone.

ME: I’m not done. Suppose that the pastor then asks your son if he masturbates . . . .

MILL: That’s disgusting. It’s none of the pastor’s business. It’s personal and should only be a family matter. I never talked to my son about masturbation. The only thing I told him was that if he got a girl pregnant, I would require him to drop out of school, get a job and pay for the baby. I don’t believe in abortion.

Our discussion continued about the petition, the stories, the damage done, the news coverage, possible excommunication, and the threats to my family, business and to myself. We talked about the types of harm these interviews cause. I didn’t have to recount them all. She was fully capable of explaining to me what the dangers were. We also discussed the toll this is taking on my time and resources.

MILL: Sam, I hope you know that you’re doing the right thing.

SAM: I do. Yes, I absolutely do.

Dear Fellow Mormons

Everyone outside the church is sickened, disgusted or repulsed by our interview process. Somehow, what is abhorrent to our neighbors has become normalized to most latter-day saints.

You have to know that what we are doing is wrong–way wrong!!!

I’m confident…

That the good members of my church are capable of being smarter than our own policies.
That when good parents sincerely consider the ramifications of sending their children behind closed doors to talk about sex, that they will start to be sickened by the possibilities.
That Mormons will start to protect their children the same way our neighbors already are protecting theirs.

Many active members have already raised their voices loudly to call for changes. Join us. Don’t sit on the sidelines while our children are at risk.

Sacred Stories of Sacred Children. A record of childhoods destroyed behind closed doors.

Local Rallies

Many friends of Protect-The-Children who want to come to the march are constrained by time, distance, or money.

Good News!!! We are organizing local rallies in offsite locations to coincide with the Utah march. Same date, same time…different place. Imagine 20 people in Seattle, 30 in Dallas, 25 in St. Louis and so on and so on and so on!

Every place we have a gathering, local media will be invited to cover. We are expecting the national media to be at the SLC event. The local rallies will illustrate in a big way that our cause is a country-wide movement and deserves national attention.

This will be a big step in bringing awareness to good Mormon parents and bishops everywhere. So far, our efforts have reached some. The march will extend our reach many times over.

14 Year Old Destroyed by Her Bishop-Today, I Honor LeeAnn

Heart-rending to look at the valiant officer in the picture and then to know her history. This is story #370 on ProtectLDSChildren.org.

This is not my story. This is my sister’s story. But she is not here to tell it. My younger sister LeeAnn became a “special project” of her Bishop _____ in Florida. She was neither his first nor his last victim. Bishop _____ convinced my blindly obedient mother that LeeAnn needed to come live with him for special care. He started raping her several months shy of her 15th birthday. The abuse continued. My sister begged my mother to be allowed to come back home but my mother refused saying that Bishop was____ a man of god. Her fellow mormon congregants in Florida knew what was happening but blamed my sister rather than the bishop. LeeAnn was finally able to break free when she went away for college. But as you can imagine, the damage was severe and deep. She was unable to have children of her own.

She became a police officer in an attempt to protect others from the evil she had endured. When I learned of this whole thing later (I was older and lived in Colorado at the time), I was racked with guilt, though my sister assured me that there was nothing I could have done. She said that the only thing that she wanted was for our mother to apologize to her for forcing her to live with a pedophile rapist. That apology never came.

On December 25th 2015, LeeAnn took her life. My mother actually attended a Mormon church in my sister’s neighborhood on the date of the memorial service. When my other sister asked my mother why she did not protect LeeAnn, my mother stated to this sister that she thought about turning the rapist in but then felt too guilty because he was called of god.

PLEASE do whatever you can to protect the vulnerable from the predators.

In February 2015, this article was published by AzCentral, Glendale Police Office Helped Family Get Off the Street. Ten months later, LeeAnn took her own life.

The raw and gaping wounds of our friends, who once were children, are now out in the open for all to read and to see.

On March 30, 2018, I and 1,000 others will honor LeeAnn’s memory by delivering her story to the headquarter steps of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. What happened to her at the hands of her bishop will not be forgotten. What has happened to thousands of other Mormon children behind-closed-doors will no longer be swept under the rug.

Prevent Another Lost Generation–Come March With Us

“This is Sick and Sad,” Parents learn a lesson.

We had postponed my daughter’s baptism for months so that her older brother could return from a sales job and baptize her. Days before the scheduled baptism we got a text from our bishop that our son was not ” worthy” to baptize his sister because he had masturbated that week. Our bishop encourages youth to text him right away when they masturbate so they can repent right away. My son is so good and honest and sensitive that he actually did it.

We tried to talk to the bishop, noting that in the church handbook it does not give bishops this authority. My husband has never been asked if he masturbated before baptizing our other kids. It also says in the handbook that fathers who are not temple worthy can baptize their kids. The bishop spent the whole time defending his point and assuring us the stake president would be on his side.

So, my little girl cried herself to sleep and my other children had to deal with unacceptable explanations. And my son…I’ve never met a young person so connected to the Spirit, so humble and willing to do what’s right, so committed to study and prayer. His best wasn’t good enough, and it was devastating. He was thrown into a pit of depression for months. Thankfully, he is doing much better, and we have learned our lesson. How did I think these interviews were okay when I won’t leave my kids alone with a doctor or dentist?

My oldest son also had his mission papers delayed for 20 months, always keeping him in limbo affecting college and life plans. Arbitrary abstinence times set up that dragged on because, well because they thought it was their business to know if he masturbates. There is plenty of scientific research showing that masturbation is normal and healthy and there is nothing in church doctrine to show otherwise. This is sick and sad. We must do better for our kids!

Sam, just wanted to give you further good news. I just finished my recommend interview with my stake president. I told him specifically of my support for your petition and that I signed it. Long story short, he said that he sees nothing in that which is contradictory to the church. He said he thinks that there will be guidance coming down that addresses it and believes that the church will change its policies. He had no issue granting me my recommend. The interview was with the stake president himself, not a counselor.

Far more people support you than oppose you. They just usually aren’t as loud. That’s why I think it’s important to express it. Have a great week Sam!

Everyone I’ve ever talked to OUTSIDE the church knows our interview practices are awful. I love the confirmation of this friend that more active members than not also know our policies MUST be changed.
