News Conference: It’s Time to Roar for the Children.

LionMany continue to ask how they can help.  Well…frankly…you have helped a ton.

  • 11,000 signatures on the petition.  Much as a result of people sharing it with courage, passion and push back from your friends.
  • 152 stories shared on protectldschildren.org.  I now know how damn hard and painful it can be to reveal your story in public.  Regardless of whether or not your name is hidden or anonymous.  Thank you from the bottom of my heart.  I have shed many tears as I read your words.
  • Today’s Tribune article by Ethan Dodge.

Here’s how you can help NOW

On Thursday January 18, 2018, we are holding a News Conference to protect the children.  Lot’s of media are expected.  Of course, it’s always possible that no one will show.  But, with all the press coverage during past 3 weeks, it’s likely that it will be a great media affair.

Besides media, I’m inviting EVERYBODY.  This can make a huge difference in our cause.

Here’s what you can do:

  • Come yourself
  • Bring others
  • If you can’t come, encourage others to come
  • Share this blog article
  • Mark that you are coming on the Facebook Event page  (Well…I don’t have that put together yet…It’s coming)
  • If you have media contacts, encourage them to come

If ten of you attend…I’ll be grateful.

If 50 of you attend…that will be awesome.

If 100 attend…it will be noted by the media.

If 300 come out…Oh My Goodness…It would be a precursor to the march that will be announced at the news conference.  Three hundred people would be a huge!  But, I’ll be grateful if ten is the number.

The wheels are turning.  The locomotive is moving.  We, the lions are roaring.  All for the safety of our children.

Below is the news release that has been distributed widely throughout Utah.

News Release–Protect LDS Children

When:    January 18, 2018  10am

What:    News conference

Where:  50 West Club & Café located at 50 W. Broadway in Salt Lake City.

Event:    Protect LDS Children

  • Current status of the Petition: Protect the Children—Stop Sexually Explicit Interviews of Mormon Youth.
  • Large collection of survivor stories.
  • Announcement of the March-for-the-Children to deliver the petition to the Church Office Building.

Three speakers will be on the podium:

  • Sam Young, concerned father, former Mormon bishop, petition organizer;
  • Joelle Casteix, sex abuse victims’ advocate, Western Regional Director of SNAP, the Survivors Network;
  • Natasha Helfer Parker, a certified sex therapist and licensed marriage & family therapist.

For decades, it has been common place for a significant number of LDS Bishops to pose questions of a sexual nature to children, all alone, behind closed doors.  This practice has caused incalculable damage to our children.

The consequences range from childhood self-loathing all the way to sexual abuse and suicide. The goal of Protect-LDS-Children is to bring a halt to these dangerous and damaging interviews.

The petition has now garnered well over 10,000 signatures.  5,000 of the signers are from Utah.  Many of them are active LDS members.

To date more than 1,000 survivor stories have been collected.  They recount horrifying and heartrending interviews, the accompanying trauma and the lasting damage.  All of this has been done to our children behind closed doors of bishop’s offices.

The time has come to bring this practice to an immediate stop.  How this will be accomplished will be a central part of the news conference message.

  2. Sounds like you are finally getting the attention for the kids that you have worked so hard for. It is an important message and I hope all the the speakers use the professionalism and decorum the subject deserves. I hope you don’t attack the church as your enemy. I think they are as concerned as we all are, but the stories you have published on your blog, are one persons story. Some are older than I am. Many are apostates and have spoken freely on anti sites. I do wish the Church had taken a proactive approach to this problem. I also wish that people would realize that the Lord works in His own time frame and a lot of time has been wasted on stories that should have been told long ago. We , as parents, failed on this duty. I hope you accomplish what you have set out to do. I hope you do it with decorum.

      1. Thank you Janice .. I believe the implications for the LDS church will be huge; the fact that someone has had the courage to talk up… no more sweeping under the carpet, refusing to accept responsibilty for such careless actions… if leaders continue to adopt this attitude. It may already be too late for the LDS Church

    1. Thanks Janice. My purpose is not to attack the church. Only a policy that is harming our children. My concern is that members of the church can’t separate the two. Attack a policy and they think I’m attacking the whole enchilada. This is my enchilada, too. I’m actually working to make it better.

    1. Don’t know what you mean by on top. But I wish Sam had had the opportunity to attack this subject first. I think it would have made a world of difference in how he is perceived by many who feel he was another person trying to lead people in a faith crisis away from the church. Sam has always been a kind and gentle man with an amazing family. I am glad to see him referring to himself as an active member the Church.

  3. Hope this isn’t too far off topic…But a suggestion to add to your site and maybe the http://protectldschildren.org/ and gopetition website:
A nicely written form letter or template that members could use to write to their own bishop informing them they are not allowed to interview their children without an adult present.
What do you all think? I’m not the best at writing letters, and I’m sure Sister Natasha Parker may have some ideas on a letter that could be non threatening to a bishop but firm for notifying they are not allowed to interview a family’s children without a parent present.
I think this tool would greatly enable a members ability to voice their concern. Many, including myself arn’t quite sure how to word such a letter and it seems nothing gets done.

    1. Hi John, That is a super idea. It’s been percolating in the back of my mind for awhile. We absolutely need this. THANKS!

P.S. Off topic? This is about as on topic as you can get.

      1. great! I’ve been trying to come up with one on my own, but again I’m horrible at writing one that wouldn’t come across as threatening, but firm. That takes skill. I’m sure I’m not the only one!

  4. Sam, thanks for all your efforts and time to support our children, members and the real Jesus!

This is how my wife, many others and I feel about this whole twisted indefensible issue, which has now been solidly defended…

Any leader who abuses his position to ask sexual questions to ANY member is a PERVERT, and a Sex Abuser, even if an obedient pervert, or just because… “everyone’s doing it!” We suppose it really is a test from Christ, to see whom and what they will obey.

For any leader to ask sexual questions of children is inexcusable. But, asking for specific details, is grooming them extra hard. He IS a True Sex Abuser (molester) at that point.
Defensible by, “…as directed by the Spirit…?” The real spirit nor Christ direct such “justified,” twisted behavior.

For an organization to ignore or defend or justify telling leaders, in writing, to ask these questions, and to get very detailed, and, as directed by the Spirit, for the members’ salvation purposes, is an extra higher level of PERVERT. Kidnappers of children, directed by God, come to mind.

For any such organization to direct and condone this behavior in writing with and official release…? Perhaps it would indeed “…be better that a millstone…”

Where’s Jesus!? Locked in the trunk of our shiny official Jesus Mobile, safe and sound from us blaspheming Him by questioning His leaders, or Him?

Where’s do we draw the line? Where does God’s Army turn into Christ’s Bullies?
